I just wanted to take a brief moment to say that as a first year high school English teacher, I'm thrilled and privileged to be teaching a science fiction course, and I chose Raw Shark as the final work we are studying. It's a class of ten Honors levels seniors, and we've covered things like War of the Worlds, Dune, and The Martian Chronicles to name just a few. They by far enjoying this book and all its possibilities the most. I even had a blog created (unspaceexplorationcommittee.wordpress.com), and was posting as "secondericsanderson" for a few months, which really threw them for a loop once we started reading the book aloud. At one point, they completed a text-based scavenger hunt within a non-divergent conceptual loop as well, which really freaked them out. They also created their own Ryan Mitchell/Mark Richardson mantras, and one student's creation is now friends with about 60 students from Northeastern University. It's pretty wicked how enthused they are. This is just a fantastic, very teachable text, and I've found that with a class of this caliber, we are able to both emotionally and academically examine the book and ourselves while going through it a few chapters a night. It's certainly the most engaging to all of the students, which is great as far as discussion goes. So, forgive me for rambling, but I just wanted to let you know that this book is a huge success in the classroom as well as on the bedside table! Thanks so much!

Wild.
I think society forced me to go to the wrong school when I was a school teen.
Perhaps I wouldn't have skipped school so often if you were my teacher back then!

Hey mrbourassa,

Thank you! That’s great to hear. Really good of you to drop by and let me know how well the book has gone over.

I actually found your unspaceexplorationcommittee.wordpress.com blog a few weeks ago and was trying to work out what it was – it read like some Fight Clubish underground reading circle!

I’m guessing your students will have finished the book by now, but please do let them know that they’re welcome to drop the boards by and post any questions/thoughts/theories they may have. Although, I can’t promise I’ll answer all the questions... (what fun would that be?)

All best wishes & thank you again,

S
