Not sure if this is somewhere else already, sorry if it is.

Anyway I was just reading a review which said that Clio is the name of one of the Muses in Greek mythology - guess what she was the muse of? Yep, memory.

Then I realised something else cool, which is that the ship is named the Orpheus - another mythological character. Orpheus was in love with a woman who then died - and then he proceeded to go down to Hades in order to rescue her back from the dead. Cool huh?

Any more cool name meanings?

I hope this isn't anywhere else, because then there would be two of us creating duplicate content.

I have always had the suspicion that there was more significance to the names in this book than met the eye. I mean, for an author to not put some thought into the names chosen for their characters is rare; so that is a good place to start.
Because of the strong linguistic tendencies in Raw Shark I started my search for name meanings in etymology (the study of word origins). I came up with a few interesting meanings to add to your investigation.

Eric Sanderson: Eric comes from the norse words ei and rikr meaning ever and king, respectively. Sanderson means "son of Sanders" (obviously). But the surname Sanders is interesting as it derives from the root words alexein and aner which when combined mean "defener of men." So Sanderson means "The Son of the Defender of Men."

Luxophage (the conceptual fish that Mr. Nobody puts in Eric): derives from the root words Luxos and Phage; light and eater, respectively, and means eater of light

Ludovician is more mysterious but this is what I've been able to dredge up. The name is derived from three root words Ludo, vic and ian. Ludo is derived from the latin Lude which means "play," vic is a root word that means to change or substitute and ian is a root word meaning human or a person. I'm pretty confident on that etymological analysis, but the interpretation to come is shaky. I think that if you were to combine those root words together you would get a meaning similar to "A person who plays with changing or substituting things." It kind of makes sense, but it is very possibly a stretch.

The last name I looked into is also somewhat dodgey.
Trey Fidorous: Trey means three and comes from archaic English, Fidorous is a combination of three root words Fid-or-ous; Fid meaning "truth or faith," or signifying "a condition of activity" and ous meaning "having the quality of."

I'm not sure what the significance of the name Mycroft Ward is other than an allusion to a Sir Arthor Connon Doyle villian who played a larger role in The Hound of the Baskervilles.

I hope you all find this as interesting as I do. And I would greatly appreciate any feedback on it or new interpretations.

I think Mycroft Ward is simply a play on Microsoft Works/Word.

Your points are great, and really thought out; I will remember them when I reread the book.
Also, I posted this in a thread about Clio VS Scout regarding Scout's name:

I related Scout to scouting, or as wikipedia/fancy terms likes to call it, Reconnaissance:

"the active seeking to determine a foe's intentions by collecting and gathering information about an enemy's composition and capabilities along with pertinent environmental conditions, via direct observation"

Of course, Scout is a tough girl, which reminded me of Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird.
