Just finished reading the absolutely brilliant Species of Spaces by Georges Perec. Anyone else read this? Think you folks would really enjoy it, especially the contingent who're also fans of Mark Danielewski's work. Take a look and let me know what you think. S

I just looked through the "look inside" preview, and it looks fairly interesting. Seems I like the fucked up layout there, as long as it has it's purpose. So I'll have to ask you that: Does it all have any purpose or is it just a cool layout for the heck of it? (adds it to a want to read list)

It's very interesting. The book's a series of essays thinking about how we imagine, interact with, divide and inhabit different spaces. There's a great piece early on exploring the space of the printed page, where the text moves around in various ways and plays in the page's sub-spaces, like footnotes and margins, but otherwise the layout is pretty straightforward. It's very, very good. Required reading for Unspace Explorers too.

Dividing up space, I've spent the last three or four days laying out plans for our upstairs bathroom, dividing up area how many sheets of this and how many boards to frame that and how many 12 inch by 12 inch tiles will fit here and how many do we need there and how much space will the shower take up and the plumbing for the shower... slightly going insane.
On another note, I think I've heard the name Perec before. Will have to check it out.

I adored A Void and I'm in the middle of Life: A User's Manual right now so I'll have to check this out, it looks very interesting. This sounds similar to two other books I've been meaning to get my hands on for some time too: The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard and You are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination by Katharine Harmon. Both seem to be quite psycho-geographic.
"In his dream, which he later forgot, he found himself alone in a room, firing a pistol into a bare white wall."

I have You Are Here, a great book to dip into. Do let us know how you get on with Species of Spaces, if you take a look. By the way, folks - I've just got hold of a copy of 53 Days. Perec died while writing this one, leaving an unfinished novel about an unfinished novel. And if that isn't the most intriguing thing you've heard today, you're probably on the wrong forum! S

I read "A Void" a few years back and loved it. Will definitely look out for this one (after I read about seven others)...
