Okay,

You guys have all been very patient, so… I'll be sharing a sentence or two from the End of Endings on this very thread every day from now until Christmas.

We're nearly there, guys.

The Infant is dreaming, and soon He will awake…

Excerpt for 16th December…

"-yes, how else might it be, I say, that such an author might find himself sole witness to events as remarkable and disturbing as those which occurred in the town of Lynn, Massachusetts, in the Year of Our Lord 1854?

I come before you now, a man granted solitary peep at things hitherto unguessed, yet so neatly am I bound by the warp and woof of providence that all testimony in the matter shall likely come to naught. But what else to do but lay out my story regardless? What else now but to hope for a stranger's curiosity; maybe even understanding? For who ain't been made a joke of by them three old Spinning Jennies, one way or another? You tell me that.

And so - if it happens that you have chanced upon these words in an attic or writing bureau; or else - if my luck's come a little better - as a book in one of those out-of-the-way places in Boston or New York that might afford it a nook of shelf, and, in time, a dusty nightshirt and spiderweb cap too; well, however it is that you've come to look upon this page - do not return it to its pile, or its box, or its shelf, but grant me the small enough indulgence of reading on, at least a little while longer. For just as the moon passing through the heavens makes bewitched courtiers of the trailing tides, so - I am now sure - there are far stranger bodies in motion beyond the human sphere, and their pulls and wants can neither be guessed at nor measured.

It could be that this story has chosen you."

18th December...

"Written on the fridge door in multi-coloured magnetic plastic letters, there’s an old message from Imogen:

St y Alert: Entropy Wants th s Kitch n.

Just before we went to bed, I’d plucked the ‘a’, the ‘i’ and the ‘e’ out of their respective words and arranged them at bottom of the door, making it look like they’d fallen down in a heap. I remember lying in bed the next morning and hearing her call out ‘oh, how we laughed’ as she opened the fridge to get milk for her tea.

Do you know why time works the way it does?"

19th December…

“Waited for ye,” said he. “Been waitin. Seen em again, have ye?”

“No,” said I, for I did not need to ask to whom the old madman was referring. But something in my face now gave hint of the previous night—of that distressing dream with the two foreigners and their terrible butcheries.

“No, says he. No is it? Oh, ye seen em alright, sure as you’re seein me now. I can tell just from looking at ye.”

20th December...

My mom used to say that when she’d shut up the bookshop, the books would take a while to settle down. A whisper of pages, the slap of a fallen cover.

It takes an *age* for books to go to sleep at night, Katie.

The books here are all silent. (Old men and women, mostly dozing now).

23rd December…

'In an Andrew Black novel, everything which first appears chaotic or tangential is ultimately shown to be relevant, as the clockwork of the plot is revealed and A leads to B leads to C leads to D. In what feels like a very similar fashion, there’s no way to tell what might be relevant amongst in all the things I’m recording here, but this – I keep telling myself - in itself is no promise of any great, eventual meaning. This is not one of his mysteries, and Black would never – could never – have written a story like this. There is no greater machinery at work here, and even if there were, the mechanism of this world would be nothing like the clockwork of a Harvey Cleaver novel, of that much I’m sure.

Andrew Black is dead, and his ticks and tocks have died with him.'

And finally, 24th December...

"I understand that these events must seem very real to you," Dr. Randle helped herself to another biscuit. "And very frightening too..."

And to you!
Now I finish working on this book, Canongate publish it, and then you can read it.
With a little luck, it will be late this year, or early next.
