Could you imagine?
Clive Wearing can't remember over thirty seconds, saying "its been like death. I've never seen a human being before. Never had a dream or a thought. Brain has been totally inactive. No thoughts at all." and David Fitzpatrick has dissociative fugue. He's trying to find out who he is.

Yikes. That sucks.

Is dissociative fugue the one where you suddenly forget who you are and then wander off and start a new life?

According to Wikipedia, yes: "Dissociative fugue usually involves unplanned travel or wandering, and is sometimes accompanied by the establishment of a new identity. After recovery from fugue, previous memories usually return intact, however there is complete amnesia for the fugue episode."

Eric Sanderson suffered from fugue, yes?
Edit: or at least according to Dr. Randle

While David is in a fugue state, Clive Wearing suffers from anterograde amnesia.

I'd also recommend neurologist Oliver Sacks' article The Abyss: Music and Amnesia and the interview with Clive's wife in The Observer:

"[Clive] became obsessed with finding out what had happened to him and yet what he didn't, couldn't, understand was that this knowledge was beyond his reach. His diaries show his desperation and also the articulate man he had so recently been. '7.46am: I wake for the first time. 7.47am: This illness has been like death till NOW. All senses work. 8.07am: I AM awake. 8.31am: Now I am really, completely awake. 9.06am: Now I am perfectly, overwhelmingly awake. 9.34am: Now I am superlatively, actually awake.'"

According to Dr. Randle, yes, Sanderson was in a fugue state: "It means 'flight'. People suffering from it do just that; they take off, run away. From their lives, from their identities, from everything." (pg.12 of the UK hardback)

And, of course, with regard to anterograde amnesia, is the film Memento, directed by Christopher Nolan.
