OH yeah! i finished the audiobook a few days ago. I've been meaning to ask, how was it decided what to leave out? Because there are quite obviously a number of words, i guess, which are not included... All of that aside, i think that Jack Davenport did a really good job! Well, actually, i think he did a better job at the OTHER characters than he did with Eric... He was really good at Randle. It made me laugh... Oh, and i never imagined Trey Fidorous as angry as he made him...

I found it very abridged, but fun, listened to it a while back but think it will be worth another listen (if just for Jack doing the female voices). I would like to find out how it was decided what to leave out as well.

I would like to find out how it was decided what to leave out as well. The answer is that there are a small number of professional abridgers that publishers call on to abridge books. As most folks probably know, I'm not a huge fan of abridging texts for audio - especially as downloading now makes unabridged audio books viable and CDs pretty much redundant. I campaigned for an unabridged version to be recorded for download, but I think publishing is still finding its feet with this new aspect of the audio market (at least, that was the case in 07) and perhaps there were concerns over piracy, I also think there may have been additional issues with getting Jack for the necessary length of time, so it didn't happen. I believe an unabridged version of the text was to be recorded in Australia for blind people, but I'm not 100% sure if that happened. All my issues with actual abridging aside, you have to admire the skill of a good abridger - without ever really thinking much about it, I'd assumed that they took 30% - 40% of the book out to make it fit on two CDs. Actually (and I'm going from memory here, so I might be wrong!) I think it was more like 70%-80% of the novel that they cut out. To make a story make sense, esp Raw Shark, with only 20-30% of the material remaining is quite an accomplishment, I reckon.

As I prefer to physically have something in front of me when I am reading I do not usually go in for audio (I think this was only the 2nd or 3rd I have had) so I am not up on the abridging stuff, I think that a good job was done as it ran smoothly but it made me go back and read the hardcopy to catch the things that had been missed out, I think I have said this before but what the hell I think Jack did a great job.
