'She cites The Raw Shark Texts, by Steven Hall, as an example of a new literary form in which the novel itself exists as a character.

“Shark Text begins with the main character reading himself back to life from near death,” she says.'
- Report from the Bookishness Symposium, University of Michigan.

I like this a lot and sounds like a really interesting event.
Would love read the full lecture text.

Ann Arbor is also my favourite place in the States, coincidentally. I have a University of Michigan T shirt and everything :)

The lecture above has since evolved into the article below...

Jessica Pressman’s piece "The Aesthetic of Bookishness in the Twenty-first Century" discusses the way The Raw Shark Texts responds as a paper novel to new media and ‘the death of the book’.

The article appears in the next (fall) issue of the Michigan Quarterly Review, which will be titled - “Bookishness: The New Fate of Reading in the Digital Age”.

I’ve been lucky enough to read Professor Pressman's article already – it’s very good and very interesting indeed. I'm hoping we may be able to provide extracts here at some point. In the meantime, do check it out.
