OK, so http://rawshark.ca/ is back in business (message from Steven on Twitter to say so). But I'm blowed if I can figure out the password.

A clue at least please folks! :-)

Yeah I just got in today as well. The Aquarium Fragment is awesome. I've been looking for Unusual Fish all day. I wish the ones that have been found were better resolution.

It is indeed a splendid bit of writing. I wish I'd found it earlier though, as now my memory of the book's plot is fading.

Am I right in thinking that it was the first Eric who went down to the aquarium to meet up with the ludovician on purpose so that he might be reunited with his beloved?

And so this would happen pretty much just before the start of the novel proper when the second Eric comes to consciousness, right?

That is correct...but I don't think it happened just before the start of the book. According to Randle Eric has had several relapses and if we assume that each relapse is yet another assault by the Ludovician then the Aquarium Fragment is the beginning of the end of the first Eric Sanderson.Eric would not require the skills to avoid the shark prior to it and ALSO, the first Eric must not die during the Aquarium Fragment because he must go on to learn everything he passes on to Eric 2 prior to being completely consumed for the first time. Eric must have studied with Fidorous for some time before the Ludovician finally caught up to him to finish what he started during the Aquarium Fragment.
