Hi, I just got done with the book. Man was i addicted to reading that. I noticed on Steven Hall's myspace page he had a quiz. In it he revealed that Ian has at some point walked through a wall. I am putting this post here for any other hidden easter eggs found in the book. I am curious, when did Ian walk through a wall?

If I recall correctly, sometime after Eric makes his way through the TheRa tunnel, he finds the First Eric Sanderson's bedroom. He goes in and shuts the door behind him, but later, Ian is in in the room. The door was locked when Eric got there, so maybe Ian walked though something?

I am at work though, and don't have a copy with me, so this could all be my imagination :)

Well Ian does appear at the end of the chapter, after Eric finds Clio's travel guide, and Eric does shut the door behind him as he walks in. Eric then goes to scour the room for any clues and so you would naturally expect him to come across Ian while searching.

There was a book written by Heinlein called "The cat who walks through walls" which features a cat that accompanies a hero called Richard Ames and his female love interest and can walk through walls. The cat was called Pixel.

The female starts out as having one identity and turning out to have another which has parallels with the Clio character and also Clio's surname is Aames which is another 'coincidence'.

There are a lot of echoes of Heinlein in this book

I love that 'The cat who walks through walls' and here was I thinking it was dodgy editing. Of course that must be the link. Bring on more Easter eggs!

here you go:

People rarely ask me about music though, which is strange because there’s a lot of music in the book and a lot of music went into writing it. There are even a few musical puzzles - spotting a song title and a few seconds searching for song lyrics will give a reader a nice little Raw Shark Easter egg of one sort or another

this is what i have found so far: on page 180 (uk edition), there is mention of happy mondays, fun lovin' criminals, and gary numan. more specifically, kinky afro (happy mondays) is playing on the radio:

Kinky Afro

You go spooky in a band

Son, I’m 30
I only went with your mother ’cause she’s dirty
And I don’t have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see yeah
I should so I take it free yeah
And all the bad preserves be things that feed me
I never help or give to the needy
Come on and see me

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don’t dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

I said dad you’re a shabby
You run around and groove like a baggy
You’re only here just out of habit
All that’s mine you might as well have it
You take 10p back and then stab it
Spray it on and tag it
So sack on me
I can’t stand the needy
Get around here if you’re asking you’re feeling

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don’t dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

So sack all the needy
I can’t stand to leave it
You come around here and you put both your feet in

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don’t dig what you gotta say
So go on and say it

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don’t hear what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

also, the title of chapter 32 may come from this:

Spanish Ladies
Traditional - Lyrics from Iron Men &; Wooden Ships, by Frank Shay

Farewell and adieu to you, gay Spanish ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain,
For we've received orders for to sail to old England;
But we hope very soon we shall see you again.

Well rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues.

Then we hove our ship to with the wind at sou'-west, my boys,
We hove our ship to our soundings for to see;
So we rounded and sounded, and got forty-five fathoms,
We squared our mainyard, up channel steered we.

Well rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues.

Now the first land we made it is called the Deadman,
Then Ram Head off Plymouth, Start, Portland, and Wight;
We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlee and Dungeness,
Until we came abreast of the South Foreland Light.

Well rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues.

Then the signal was made for the grand fleet for to anchor,
All in the Downs that night for to meet;
Then it's stand by your stoppers, let go your shank painters,
Haul all your clew garnets, stick out tacks and sheets.

Well rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues.

Now let every man toss of a full bumper,
And let every man toss off a full bowl;
And we'll drink and be merry and drown melancholy,
Singing, here's a good health to all true-hearted souls.

Well rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas,
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues.

however, in the movie Jaws:

Quint: Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

the first line is also the title of chapter 30.

the following lyrics definitely seem to be related to the book:

the title of chapter 35:

just like heaven - the cure

show me
show me
show me
how you do that trick
the one that makes me scream
she said
the one that makes me laugh
she said
and threw her arms around my neck

show me how you do it
and i promise you
i promise that i'll run away with you
i'll run away with you

spinning on that dizzy edge
i kissed her face and kissed her head
and dreamed of all the different ways i had
to make her glow
why are you so far away?
she said
why won't you ever know that i'm in love with you?
that i'm in love with you?

you
soft and only
you
lost and lonely
you
strange as angels
dancing in the deepest oceans
twisting in the water
you're just like a dream...
you're just like a dream...

daylight licked me into shape
i must have been asleep for days
and moving lips to breathe her name
i opened up my eyes
and found myself alone
alone
alone
above a raging sea
that stole the only girl i loved
and drowned her deep inside of me

you
soft and only
you
lost and lonely
you
just like heaven

yet another reference in The Cat Who Walks Through Walls

Quote:
pg 259 Athene is the supervising computer of this planet; other computers here are just machines, not sentient. Athene runs everything. Just as Mycroft Holmes once ran everything on Luna

One of the letters that Eric 2 receives in a parcel from Eric 1 is addressed to Steven Hall.

THERA... It is the other name of the greek island also called Santorini. All the other tunnels to reach Fidorous have the names of Greek islands. By the point of view of Eric this must sound like an unbelievable coincidence. :-)

That's exactly the moment I was thinking of. The first time I read that passage, I had to re-read it a few times. I was convinced I'd missed something. Nice to know it wasn't just me. :D

Actually, Mycroft Holmes is a character originally created by Arthur Conan Doyle, who is mentioned in TRST. Mycroft is a major character in 'The Hounds of Baskerville,' the specific book talked about.
