i was curious, found the original work by darwin and then highlighted the corresponding green "plant" words from TRST (pages 126-127 in the UK first edition). they have been added here. most of the words match up, only in a few instances they don't. i haven't had the chance to go into it more deeply, to see whether it can be decoded, or if it even means anything at all, etc. any other thoughts?

Interesting how that whole chunk in the middle is missing.

I had no idea the Aquarium Fragment existed! I must track it down...
I was just about to ask about the Origin of Species. I can find no reason for all those plants in there. Neither portion of text seems to make any sense without the other, and neither the highlighted sections nor the spaces in between make any recogniseable kind of shape. I guess it was just a device my Hall to creep people out a bit (it worked on me *shiver*) and it must represent the Luxophage in some way, since it's inside the book and Eric makes no mention of the missing replaced words, but other than that I'm stumped.

the more i think about it, the more i think that there must be some sort of significance to the placement of all the plants. hmmm...

I did these a while ago. We three have probably seen them, since I posted them on the MZD forum, but for everyone here: If there's a reason (or, rhyme, for that matter) to the plant placement, I don't think it's derived from their placement on the page within the book, as it ends up looking like a big blob rather than anything enlightening. Also Ben, are you planning to upload pictures of the Canadian Paperback Undex (36b) to that Flicker eventually? I'm pretty sure that's all you're missing to have it be a complete resource of all current Negatives.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that 36b is in the UK Paperback.

Err, yeah, that's what I meant.
Some sort of knowledge lapse I suppose.

the UK paperback Undex (36b) has been added. but back to the plant, if it's not the placement, what could it be? it's got to be something... and if i think about it any more, my head is going to explode too!

Well, the book has "with Evolution Engine by Trey Fidorous" as a subtitle. Perhaps it's one of his experiments and the placement is simply due to random growth.
It could also be a fishtank.
...As I was typing this, I had another idea: Eric doesn't mention the replaced words, so maybe they weren't there when he read the text. The evolution engine made the plants grow in our copies of TRST.

My first thought was that all the "plant" in the new version is the conceptual environment for the luxophage. Perhaps patches of seaweed, similar to how "water" being said over and over created an ocean at the end. Plants would also be good camoflouge for a fish like a lamprey.

This is what i'm thinking. you can't stick a conceptual fish in a glass jar with some water. I'm thinking that Origin of Species is a sort of aquarium for the luxophage. A holding tank that keeps it alive. I love the idea of the plants reproducing in OUR books, but when i was listening to the audiobook, they have him say almost a quarter of it, and it fades out. And remembering that in the end, all of what we were reading was almost a memoir of Eric, from when he was writing it on the boat... i think that the 'plant's WERE there when eric read the book.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned it could be a fish tank but I didn't quite get it. Thanks for elaborating Mia, that is an awesome idea. :D
